Research Results for Promoting the Use of Multifunctional (Heating and Hot-water Supply) EcoCute for Cold Regions

Energy Utilization Research Section

EcoCute (see Note 1) is a high energy-efficient water heater, using "heat pump technology" for taking thermal energy from outdoor air as in an air conditioner. In collaboration with SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., We have developed the multifunctional EcoCute, with hot-water supplying and 24-hour heating functions (the sales started in June 2007) to reduce home- and water-heating energy consumption in Hokkaido, based on EcoCute technological advantages. Also, We have conducted research activities for supporting the use of other high energy-efficient equipment.

Outline of the Study

In this study, HEPCO conducted a field survey on running costs and state of operation in total electric housing with multifunctional EcoCute.

Achievements

  • Out of 16 households surveyed, the annual running costs for home heating, water heating, cooking and lighting in 3 households in Sapporo (floor area of approx. 130m2, 4 family members) was 200 to 230 thousand yen. The electricity rate in January with a high heating load was 27 to 33 thousand yen. Thus, the running costs in a very cold season were found to be favorable.
  • There are 2 households of higher power consumption according to the installation survey, in which the operational efficiency of the heat pump becomes lower due to insufficient panel heaters compared to residential loads. In order to balance heating feeling and running costs, we proposed the combination of a heat pump system and a radiator with the most appropriate design specifications.
  • We have provided information on previous findings and technical data for consultants in the electrification field throughout Hokkaido to support use promotion and consulting activities.

In addition, by comprehending the state of heating operation, this system employs a new heating control method (transfer control of water supply temperature) that automatically transfers to the state of high energy efficiency to improve the entire system efficiency. The multifunctional EcoCute, which realized the first full-scale heating system in Hokkaido, was awarded FY 2007 "Energy-saving Grand Prize - Energy Saving Center Chairman Prize."
