Study on Lightning Stroke Damage to Distribution Equipment

It is an important issue dealing with natural phenomenon such as lightning in order to manage distribution lines and maintain their reliability. Thus, our research is studying about the durability of distribution equipment against lightning stroke damage through collecting data of that.
Outline of the Study
We have been surveying the circumstance of damaged equipment such as buildings' arrangement and lightning arresters' installation. We are also disassembling the damaged one and analyzing the detail when we cannot externally find the damaged part.
Achievements
We found that the same part of the coil, which must be a weak point, was always burnt out due to high voltage resulted from lightning stroke when we disassembled the pole-mounted transformer.
Plan for the Future
We are going to develop effective and low-cost countermeasure of distribution equipment against lightning stroke, based on these survey results.
